Joe Biden to tackle chip shortage with executive order

Biden administration plans “aggressive measures” to ease global semiconductor shortage, Bloomberg reports. The shortage of chips has had an impact on the automotive industry and has contributed to the scarcity of next-generation gaming consoles.

President Biden “is expected to sign an executive order directing a government-wide supply chain review for critical products in the coming weeks, with the chip shortage at the heart of the investigation,” the report said. Among the administration’s priorities: “identify bottlenecks in supply chains” to alleviate current shortages.

Longer term, the White House could also create new incentives to bring chipmaking to the United States, according to CNBC. Senior executives at chipmakers, including Intel and Qualcomm, have urged the Biden administration to fund such initiatives, although it’s unclear what form the incentives might take.
