The scandal erupted earlier this week, after Principal Assistant to the Governor, Melissa DeRosa, told Democratic lawmakers that the data had been delayed because officials feared the information “could be used against us” by the Ministry of Justice. Justice of the Trump administration.

The new salvos from Republicans and fellow Democrats in Cuomo mark a dramatic turnaround from the early days of the pandemic, when Cuomo’s daily briefings helped solidify a national reputation for leadership. The briefings, in which he promised to deliver “just the facts,” earned him an International Emmy and helped lead to his book, “American Crisis.”

The Cuomo administration significantly underestimated the number of deaths from COVID-19 among residents of long-term care facilities for months. It is now nearly 15,000, against 8,500 previously disclosed.

The new toll is about one-seventh of the roughly 90,000 people living in nursing homes in 2019 in New York City, which is among the nation’s largest residents.

Cuomo pointed to a small but growing research suggesting that the uncontrolled spread of the community is the single most important driver of nursing home outbreaks, and he said insufficient support from the federal government for travel restrictions, testing and protective equipment made New York and its suburbs particularly vulnerable.
