Avengers: Endgame opened up a whole box of worms when he introduced the concept of time travel and multiple timelines, showing Earth’s Mightiest Heroes potentially creating dozens and dozens of branch realities in their quest to reclaim the Infinity Stones from the past. And one of those branch realities proved too tempting for Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), who would decide to retire and live to old age with her true love, Peggy Carter (Hayley atwell).
But has he changed the past? Or did he go back to the main timeline to finally find Bucky (Sebastian stan) and Sam (Anthony mackie) like an old man? Directors Russo Brothers finally cleared up oldest mystery Avengers: Endgame chronology.
In an interview with the Lights Camera Barstool podcast (via CinemaBlend), Joe russo revealed that he and his brother Anthony russo came up with an ‘internal logic that we defined in the room’ regarding some of the more tangled concepts of time travel Avengers Endgame. Most potentially complicated: Steve Rogers’ timeline, or whether he changed the past or just moved from an alternate timeline. For the Russo brothers, it was the latter.
“Based on everything that happened he would have been in a branch reality and then should have moved on to that, so he jumped from one to the other and handed the shield back,” said Joe Russo, explaining:
“One thing is clear that Anthony and I discussed, I don’t know if we discussed this publicly at all, Cap should have gone back to the main timeline. It’s something that, yes, he would have been in a branch reality, but he should have gone back to the main timeline to give Sam Wilson that shield.
Turns out there has been internal disagreement on this topic before, with the Russos and writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely at odds over whether Cap was in a branch reality. But the Brothers dig their heels and double down on their take on, which lines up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s slow teasing of the multiverse: we see the beginnings of it in WandaVision, and it will continue to be explored in Spider-Man 3 and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And it allows the Russo Brothers to avoid dealing with the complicated mess of time travel logic, and whether Steve’s reunion with his lost love in the past may have sent ripples into the future. He was just living in retirement in an alternate reality, before deciding it was time to hand the Captain America mantle over to Sam.
Oddly enough, while this reveal sets a nice course for Steve Rogers’ storyline, it somehow opens the door for a whole new story of Cap’s adventures in this alternate timeline – a possibility given the whispers that Chris Evans might or might not. repeat his role as Steve Rogers at some point in the future. It’s probably not something complicated considering the actor was happy to put the MCU behind him, but anything is possible, right?
