A team of fans managed to reverse engineer the source code of the two Grand Theft Auto III and grand Theft Auto Vice City, make files available for download.

This is great news! We recently saw what reverse engineering games can mean for modders, with Mario 64 being the greatest example, allowing it to be “ported” to the PC instead of being executed via emulation.

Although this is not the primary focus here, the two GTA the games are already available on PC – the source code also allows modders to create potentially new and interesting stuff. Like, using Mario 64 as an example again, added ray tracing to the game.

That said, accessing the source code makes the port to other easier platforms, and the team has already run the code on Switch, Vita, and Wii U, while also hoping to have it on PS2 and Xbox.
