It’s no secret that we are all tired of Kris Bryant business rumors. I mean we have to write them down – we have to – but after almost two years, I just want something to happen. It doesn’t have to be a deal, but just definitive CLARITY, so I can lock myself mentally and emotionally into “this is what the future will look like when it comes to Bryant and the Cubs.” Shy of that, it was a little hard to even think about the things you would normally be in this time of year – can it bounce back? What would a platform year look like for Bryant? what really went wrong? etc.
I knew that despite a trade – it’s as final as it gets – we would get little from the Cubs on what’s to come, but today President Jed Hoyer gave us roughly the best we can get at the start. spring training:
Jed Hoyer just now: “At the moment, we are not engaged in commercial discussions and we have not been for a while.
“When the Mets information was inaccurate?”
“That is what I am saying.”
The suggested team should look like the now come opener.

Note that the “Mets thing” is a reference to the New York report last week that recently picked up on discussions between the Cubs and Mets over Bryant. When Justin Turner signed and there were no follow-up rumors involving Bryant it was sure * it * was like that, but it means a little more coming from Hoyer in this way.
So. Yes, things can happen in spring training, but it often happens that huge exchanges that have a dramatic impact on two lists and two budgets just don’t happen in the spring. Hoyer couldn’t say for sure that nothing would happen – some teams could suffer an injury and make a call – but I think it’s as close as it could get.
We can safely think of the 2021 Cubs as featuring Kris Bryant at third base in his year on the march. What that will mean for the Trade Deadline or after the season, well, it’s going to stay in the air for a while. But just like that time of last year, we can breathe out and say, okay, it’s time to hope that Bryant kicks the ass as Cub.
