Domingo German is set to have another opportunity with the Yankees after serving his suspension for breaking Major League Baseball domestic violence protocols.
Aaron Boone said on Wednesday that he, general manager Brian Cashman and bench coach Carlos Mendoza had spoken with the German to “welcome him” to his ban, but adding that nothing would be guaranteed this spring.
“We know he has paid a huge price from a career perspective, having really missed a full season,” the manager said on a Zoom call from Tampa. “I hope it’s behind us. We feel like he’s in a good position to come in and now it’s his time to come out and resurrect his career and compete for a place on this team. … It’s been a very long year to come back.
The Yankees need as many quality guns as they can to support Gerrit Cole, and if the German can get back to the form he was in 2019, when he won 18 games and pitched 143 innings before his suspension , that would give a boost.
But the German has to show that he can still be efficient on the mound – and avoid trouble off the pitch. He was suspended for 81 games in January 2020 for breaking protocol and missed all of last season and announced he was quitting baseball – although he later picked it up and pitched during the winter prom in the Dominican Republic.
“Certainly nothing was promised,” Boone said of German’s role on the team. “We’re going to be there and try to support each other because we can move forward not only to make the most of himself on the mound and between the lines, but also to become the best he can be off the pitch. “
