SALT LAKE CITY – A woman has died after being thrown from an SUV while driving on I-15 on Wednesday, Utah Highway Patrol officials said.
Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Nick Street said the driver of the Mercedes SUV had merged from the left-most lane onto I-15 and attempted to exit onto the I-80 slip road westbound . The driver lost control of the SUV and rolled twice before coming to a stop on the 500 South ramp to I-180 westbound.
The driver was thrown through the sunroof due to the force of the roll and came to a stop approximately 30 feet from the raised access ramp. The other occupants of the vehicle, a male passenger and two children, did not appear to be in critical condition but were taken to hospital, Street said.
The crash was initially thought to be fatal, but the driver showed “signs of life” and was reported to be in critical condition. Street said the woman was taken to hospital but died of her injuries.
According to the Utah Department of Transportation, the ramp from I-15 northbound to I-80 westbound is currently closed, but is expected to open around 6:45 p.m.
Further information, including the identity of those involved, has not been released.
