Demi Lovato looks back – quite publicly – at the overdose that nearly killed her in July 2018.
“I had three strokes. I had a heart attack,” says the singer in the new trailer for her YouTube documentary, Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil. “My doctors said I had five to ten minutes more.”
The four-part series, which kicks off on March 23, will include interviews not only with Lovato, but with friends such as Elton John and Christina Aguilera, and family members about what happened and its aftermath.
Many of them speak directly to the overdose, which occurred at Lovato’s home in Los Angeles on July 24, 2018. Police responded to a 911 call regarding a medical emergency, and they re-launched Lovato with Narcan, who is used to treat drug overdoses, before taking it to nearby Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She spent two weeks there before moving to an inpatient rehabilitation center. The incident occurred a month after Lovato revealed in her song “Sober” that she had relapsed after maintaining her sobriety for six years. She has spoken in interviews, songs and other documentaries before about struggling with addiction since she was a teenager.
In the trailer for this, her mother, Dianna De La Garza, recalls that in 2018 the family “watched everything. [Demi’s] blood comes out of his body in a machine. “
While Lovato herself promoted the doc, she told reporters coming back from the situation was difficult.
“I was left with brain damage, and I still suffer the effects today,” she said, by People. “I don’t drive a car because I have blind spots in my vision. And I also had trouble reading for a long time. It was a big deal when I got to read a book which was like two months later because my vision was so blurry. “
In the new clip, she says she’s ready to return to the studio.
“I’ve had a lot of lives, like my cat, you know. This is my ninth life, ”she said. “I’m ready to go back to doing what I love, which is making music. I don’t live my life for other people, their titles or their comments on Twitter.”
To that end, Lovato is releasing a blues-tinged song with the same name as the project, which can be heard in the background of the teaser. She is also set to star in a new NBC comedy titled Hunger, about a group of friends having food problems.
