Fans of the striking retro visuals of Square Enix’s JRPG Octopath traveler are going to be regaled because a kind of follow-up will head to the Nintendo Switch in 2022. The new game, which bears the working title of Project triangle strategy, is built from the same 2D-meet-3D mold of its predecessor. A demo is now available on the Switch eShop and you can check out these visuals in the trailer below.

This time around, the focus is on tactical role-playing: the combat system sees players move along a grid, taking turns to attack. Additional game mechanics allow you to position your units on higher ground, giving you the advantage of increased range. You can also flank enemies from both sides and strike from behind using powerful follow-up attacks. While elemental chain reactions, ranging from fire and ice to lightning, can be used to alter the environment and defeat enemies. This should all sound familiar to fans of old school tactical games or anyone who has tried their hand at Final Fantasy Tactics.

The story, meanwhile, revolves around a battle between three vying nations to take control of the dwindling resources of salt and iron. Like with Octopath, it looks like you’re going to take control of a bunch of characters, but this time there’s something called the Belief Scale (split between utility, morality, and freedom) that each individual can influence . Hence the “TRIANGLE” in capitals of the title. If you’re not quite sure what all of this means, go ahead and try the demo.
