The Red Sox announced this afternoon that they have claimed the right John schreiber off Tigers waivers and placed left-handed Chris Sale on the 60-day injured list to open a list of 40 players. Sale’s move shouldn’t come as a shock, given that he underwent surgery on Tommy John on March 30 of last year. It was reported last month that his rehab was due to come to the end of the typical 12 to 15 month recovery period. He will likely be an option for the Sox in early summer.
Schreiber, 27 next month, pitched 28 2/3 innings with Detroit over the past two seasons but hasn’t done well, registering a 6.28 ERA during that time. However, other metrics are more bullish on the former 15th round pick, in large part thanks to an above-average 25.6% take-out rate and a very manageable 6.2% walk rate. Schreiber, who has a handgun, has a 1.99 ERA career in four minor league seasons, including a 2.28 mark in 59 1/3 innings at Triple-A.
Schreiber doesn’t throw particularly hard, as is common with handguns, but he’s been a thorn in the hitters’ side throughout his tenure in the minor league – right-handed people in particular. Right-handed opponents posted a laughable .192 / .270 / .311 slash against him in 2019. Beyond that, Schreiber has several years of minor league options remaining, giving the Red Sox both depth and flexibility with their enclosure if they choose to keep it. on the list of 40 players.
