Somewhere Jane Fonda is rreally feel the burn.
Apple TV + took the leggings off their upcoming Rose Byrne-fronted aerobics drama in the ’80s on Friday Physical, posting both a first look (see above) and an approximate premiere date.
Bowing this summer, the 10-episode grim satire finds Byrne playing Sheila Rubin, “a quietly tortured and seemingly respectful housewife” living in 1980s San Diego who finds an unconventional path to power through a unlikely source: the world of aerobics.
“At first, addicted to exercise itself, Sheila’s real path to empowerment comes when she discovers a way to merge this new passion with the burgeoning videotape technology to start a revolutionary business,” continues the official description of the show. “The series traces its epic journey from a stifled and neglected catalyst to a powerful and confident economic force, as Sheila transforms into someone we take for granted today (but who was entirely radical then). – the female lifestyle guru.
Physical was created by Annie Weisman (Almost family, The daring type), which also serves as a showrunner.
Best known for film roles like Bridesmaids, Neighbors and To spy, Byrne also starred alongside Glenn Close in the legal drama FX. Damage, winning a pair of Emmy nominations for her work as lawyer Ellen Parsons. She most recently appeared as feminist trailblazer Gloria Steinem in the FX / Hulu miniseries Mrs. America.
