Two police officers in Lonoke, Arkansas, confronted the driver of an SUV parked at the fast food restaurant on Saturday night after the vehicle was connected to a child abduction case in North Carolina. Lonoke is located approximately 43 kilometers east of Little Rock.
The driver, later identified as William Robert Ice, 38, of Jackson Center, Pa., Began shooting at officers as he exited the SUV. One officer was shot while the other, who was not injured, retaliated as Ice again entered the vehicle and fled, state police said.
An Arkansas State soldier spotted the SUV and chased it until the vehicle broke down in a snow bank. The 14-year-old fled from the vehicle and was secured by a state soldier.
Inside the SUV, a soldier found Ice seriously injured from what initially appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Ice later died in a Little Rock hospital.
Arkansas State Police, in conjunction with Davidson County, North Carolina Sheriff’s Deputies, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, have determined that the girl had been kidnapped.
Ice was also wanted by Pennsylvania law enforcement in other cases of child predators, according to Arkansas State Police.
