Valheim is a game where players explore a vast world and build their own bases in a hostile desert. There are a lot of reasons to worry, from feral pigs to sea monsters, but one boss in particular is causing everyone a big headache. Meet Bonemass, a Slimer-like type who, despite being just the third boss, is sort of the biggest obstacle in the game.
In Valheim, your progress and exploration are stuck behind bosses, which can be summoned on mysterious altars hidden around the world. For example, to extract the ore from the mysterious Black Forest, players must kill a giant lightning moose and take its hardened wood. This allows players to craft a pickax, and when they venture into the Black Forest, they will find the Altar of the Next Boss, a giant Ent carrying Swamp Keys.
The first boss is a useful exercise in teaching Vikings how to block with a shield and manage their stamina while hitting a big, beefy foe. The Ancient Ent teaches players to dodge area-of-effect attacks and deal damage while in motion.
Bonemass, on the other hand, apparently has no limits. Really, Iron Gate, why does Bonemass have six mechanical? It has tons of environmental damage, which means players have to dodge a lot of AoE and hits. He summons adds, and they are surprisingly difficult to fight. He’s the poison damage king, so be sure to bring some resistance potions. It hits like a truck and has a huge health stash, so maybe bring some health potions as well, because you’ll be there for a while. Lastly, your sharp weapons are useless, so bring clubs and maces.
There is a lot going on there! Players have definitely noticed how difficult Bonemass is and are sharing stories on social media about their long struggle to get him out and acquire his trusty wishbone. Some players have learned that they can harpoon Bonemass, pull him into the ocean, then surround him with a boat while scaling him down. This is not how the fight is supposed to go, but hey, all is fair in love and war. Especially if you are battling a giant slime.
“Of course, we’ll be listening to feedback from the community, and you never know what we’ll do in the future to balance,” said Henrik Törnqvist, co-founder of Iron Gate. “Bringing poison resistance potions is my best advice.” (We have a few suggestions in our guide on how to beat Bonemass.)
Overall, Bonemass is not a revolutionary boss or unstoppable force. It’s just an unusually tough fight in an otherwise well-paced game. Going from boss one to boss two is enough to feel like you’ve been challenged and grown up as a Viking. Switching to boss three is twice as difficult, while boss four looks like a downgrade on difficulty. Lucky for everyone, a little dedication, a good team and / or a willingness to Bonemass cheese dragging it into the ocean is enough to meet this challenge.
