Now, two years later, the former No. 1 overall pick is in Los Angeles. Coach Sean McVay is moving on – but he’s not doing it without any blame.
“When you look at the four years we’ve been together, there are a lot of times you can smile about it,” McVay said, via The NFL Network. “And I would say there are a lot of things that when I think about it, I certainly wish I had been better for him in some cases … I’m not going to run away from the things that I could have been better for him as as a leader and as a coach. “
Goff and two future first-round draft picks were traded to the Detroit Lions in exchange for Matthew Stafford last month.
Although the team signed him for a massive extension after their Super Bowl appearance, Goff has since declined – both statistically and in his position with the team. McVay and the Rams even decided to start substitute John Wolford in their playoff game last season, even though Goff has said he’s ready to have minor thumb surgery.
By the time the trade ceased, Goff could tell he was no longer wanted in Los Angeles.
“I’m just excited to be somewhere I know I want and like myself,” he says.
McVay: ‘I could have done better’
While it’s easy to blame the quarterback for offensive struggles, McVay said doing it “exclusively” in this case is “an unfair narrative.”
Much, he says, falls on him.
“I’m not going to apologize about it, but there’s a lot, even some of the decision-making in games,” he said, via The Los Angeles Times. “Are you consistently putting him in the right positions to be successful?”
