The UFC is aiming for a second women’s title fight for its pay-per-view event in April. Zhang Weili vs. Rose Namajunas for the strawweight title is in the works for UFC 261 on April 24, sources told ESPN on Friday.
While the fight is yet to be finalized, April 24 is the date the promotion and both fighters are aiming for. The hope is that the fight will be finalized in the coming days, according to several sources.
Earlier this week, ESPN reported that Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jessica Andrade for the women’s flyweight title was also booked for this card.
The UFC had been working on holding the event in Singapore, sources said. However, sources now say it looks like it will take place in Las Vegas. These plans are not yet finalized either.
The fight would mark Zhang’s first in over a year. She last fought in March 2020 when she beat Joanna JÄ™drzejczyk (21-1) by split decision in a fight which was the consensual fight of the year 2020 in MMA.
Namajunas (9-4), a former strawweight champion, just picked up a split decision victory over Andrade in July.
