New Orleans officer killed as he intervened in altercation at high school basketball game

The officer, who has not been identified, was a Tulane police officer and a reserve Second City Court officer, New Orleans Police Commissioner Shaun Ferguson said.

The officer was at a basketball game at George Washington Carver High School when an individual attempted to enter, triggering an altercation with a staff member, Ferguson said.

The policeman overheard the disturbances and tried to get the individual out of the school. As they approached the front door, the individual drew his gun and fired a shot which hit the officer in the chest.

The officer was taken to New Orleans University Medical Center where he later died.
