In what is sure to be a trend in the league until the start of the league’s new year, the Houston Texans have made a pair of cuts from veteran offensive linemen. Both could be of interest to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Earlier in the week, the team dumped swingman Senio Kelemete. And yesterday they cut longtime starting center Nick Martin.
The #Texans are releasing all-round veteran Senio Kelemete today, creating around $ 1.5 million in ceiling space. The 30-year-old has started 42 games in his career. They also freed LB Peter Kalambayi.

Kelemete is the most economical option. At 31 in May, he made 22 career debuts in eight years in the NFL. Most of that time has come on guard, but he has the flexibility to play along the line, even including the cross in a pinch. He hasn’t recorded many shots, if any, at the pivot in a regular-season game, but he’s absorbed preseason reps during his time with the New Orleans Saints. In college with Washington, he went from defensive tackle to right guard to left tackle. He’s a cheap and versatile option for a Steelers offensive line with plenty of holes to fill, even though he’s a better substitute than the starter.
Martin is the best and most expensive option. At 28 in April, he started all 16 games of the past three seasons for Houston. Better known for his pass blocking than his run blocking, he immediately became one of the best free agent crosses on the market, joining Corey Linsley of the Green Bay Packers, who is expected to test open waters. We have followed Martin’s entire career, highlighting him as an outstanding player at the 2016 Senior Bowl.
There is no obvious connection between either player and the Steelers. Aside from the fact that this is a Pittsburgh team on the verge of needing a little bit of offensive line help, both along the starting fives and in depth purposes. Kelemete and Martin are just two names to keep in mind when free agency. Or even earlier. Since both players have been released, they are free to sign at any time.
Put it like this. These two Texans are infinitely more likely to become Steelers than JJ Watt.
