On a rainy day in the north, the Phillies took the field in Lakeland, Fla. On Sunday afternoon for their first 2021 spring training game. In front of a crowd of 1,000 fans, the Phils lost to the Tigers, 10-2.
It was a seven-end game. If the managers of both teams agree, the spring training games can be reduced to seven or five innings. You will see a lot of seven innings deals over the next month.
Ivan Nova, a non-rostered guest vying for the starting fifth position, started for the Phillies and lasted a third of an inning. He gave up an estimated 458-foot first home run to stop Willi Castro before loading up the bases and marching into a race. After 27 throws, Nova’s afternoon was over. The Tigers had six runs in the set.
“He was just a bit far away, he wasn’t attacking the zone,” said manager Joe Girardi, who had Nova in the Bronx for seven seasons. “I don’t really overdo it. First exit. He continues to take advantage of his strength and the sharpness of his pitches.
Adam haseley started in central field and started the game with a home run in opposite field. He also walked and lined up in three plate appearances.
Scott kingery, another contender for the center position, hit second and went 0 for 3. The Phillies had just four hits: Haseley homerun, a Mickey moniak double and single from short stop CJ Chatham and receiver Jeff Mathis.
“(Haseley) had some good at-bats today,” Girardi said. “Right now for me there isn’t much you can do to hurt your chances, but you can help your chances. I give the guys the benefit of the doubt the first few weeks. He had good at-bats, Moniak had good at-bats today, which was just good to see.
The afternoon’s most efficient pitcher was the right-hander Bryan mitchell, a 29-year-old swingman who played 48 games (nine starts) for the Girardi Yankees from 2014 to 2017. He struck out three and put a man on base in two innings.
“He threw the ball really well today,” Girardi said.
The Tigers were entitled to around 2,200 fans at Joker Marchant Stadium and the reported attendance was 2,000, although there doesn’t appear to be that many. Girardi was sad not to see or hear any providers but it was a step in the right direction and the players and coaches enjoyed being around some fans again.
The Phillies are expected to have a similar number of fans in Monday afternoon’s spring opener at the newly renamed BayCare Ballpark. Aaron Nola will start. The game will be televised on NBC Sports Philadelphia + at 1:05 p.m.
Things are also moving in the right direction here. As of March 1, there will be a limit of 2,500 people at outdoor sporting events in the city of Philadelphia. This includes stadium employees.
“It’s a much better feeling,” Girardi said. “I think the players really appreciate it. I thought the mood was good today and it was encouraging.
