For over four years, Apple’s MacBook Pro has featured the Touch Bar as a display / control bar input device above the keyboard on these laptops. While there have been reports that Apple may phase out the Touch Bar in future models, an open-source Linux driver for the component continues to progress to the main kernel.
Sent on Saturday by indie developer Ronald Tschalär, the latest reverse-engineered open-source driver code that allows Touch Bar and ALS support to work for MacBook Pro 13, * / 14, * / 15, * models. Apple Touch Bar driver code was previously posted to the kernel mailing list, while Apple MBP 15 * models are now supported and various code improvements have been made as a result of previous comments.

Apple iBridge Driver (T1 Security Chip) is also required for interfacing with iSight Web Camera, Light Sensor, and Fingerprint Sensor. At the moment, Linux driver coverage is focused on the Touch Bar and light sensor / ALS support.
This effort to support the Apple Touch Bar on Linux goes back years, albeit at a slow pace given the limited number of developers involved and without any support from Apple.
