America’s oldest collegiate debating society voted to strip Senator Ted Cruz of his highest honor, according to the Daily Princetonian.
The American Whig-Cliosphic Society at Princeton University has passed a motion to rescind Cruz’s 2016 James Madison Award for Distinguish Public Service, the newspaper reported.
Members of society brought forward the motion because they were unhappy with Cruz’s support for allegations of baseless voter fraud in the 2020 election and the Jan.6 attack on the Capitol.
The award – introduced in 1960 – is given to people who have “taken up the arduous but fair cause of devoting their lives to the betterment of society,” according to the company’s website.
This is the first time in the company’s history that members have voted to reverse the award, the Daily Princetonian said.
After a 90-minute debate, 37 people voted in favor of the cancellation, 32 voted not to cancel and five people abstained, the newspaper reported.
Cruz graduated from Princeton in 1992 and was considered a brilliant orator in his youth.
The company’s board of directors will now make a decision from the trustees as to whether the award should be formally revoked, according to The Daily Princetonian.
Cruz’s approval rating has dropped in recent weeks. An untimely trip to Cancun as his home state of Texas suffered a catastrophic winter storm took his toll in the polls.
His approval rating fell from +6 to -5 between Feb. 18 and 28, according to a Morning Consult poll of more than 2,000 registered voters.
Cruz’s reputation is also tarnished by his refusal to accept the result of the 2020 presidential election.
The senator led the Senate GOP effort to oppose President Joe Biden’s certification of victory. Several lawmakers called on Cruz to step down after a pro-Trump mob violently stormed the Capitol within minutes of giving a speech in the Senate.
