Candace Owens, Conservative commentator and co-founder of BLEXIT, took to Twitter on Saturday to condemn a bill under consideration in the California legislature that would ban “boy” and “girl” signage in large retail stores .
“California has proposed a bill to ban boys and girls sections in toy and clothing stores in order to create a ‘safe space’ for children,” Owens tweeted on Saturday. “They want to fine retailers $ 1,000 for using the words ‘boy’ and ‘girl.’ I can’t speak to how positively despicable Democratic politicians are.”

Owens’ comments are in response to a bill introduced by California Assembly members Evan Low and Cristina Garcia earlier this month that would require retail stores with 500 or more employees to “maintain zones undivided from their sales area ”in order to create a“ safe ”. space “for children.
Some retail stores have already removed gender-specific signage. In 2015, Target started the practice after customers suggested that identifying products by gender preferences was not necessary.
“As much as I’d like to think of this as breakthrough legislation, it’s something the industry is already doing. We’re just trying to catch up,” Low told the Sacramento Bee.
Low said he was also motivated to introduce the bill after the daughter of one of his staff members became frustrated at having to search “the boys’ aisle” for science toys.
“That was the impetus for it all, this is how to create a safe space for children in society today,” he said.

He said the bill would become even more important as children begin to return to retail stores after the coronavirus pandemic, to ensure they can shop “without stigma.”
If passed, the bill would come into effect on January 1, 2024 and penalize retailers with a fine of $ 1,000 if they refuse to degrade their clothing and toy sections.
