The latest major update for Chrome mobile introduced a grid layout for tabs and the ability to group them together. A more minor addition of Chrome on Android today allows you to preview a page before fully opening it.
The context menu that appears when you long press links now has a “Preview page” option. Appearing between “Open in incognito tab” and “Copy link address,” tap a sheet for the page in question that covers the majority of your screen, but cannot be expanded further.
A top bar includes the site favicon, page name and domain, as well as a button to open in a suitable window (as part of groups). You can close it from the upper right corner “x” or by sliding the tab down.
This addition is surprisingly useful for some users, especially in light of the way tabs open today. This gives you a chance to decide if something is worth committing to in a group and makes you smarter about managing open pages / queues.
The new feature “Preview page” is rolling out in Chrome 89 for Android via a server-side update tonight. Google has been working on this feature for over two years, and it’s now prime time ready on the stable channel.
