Adobe officially unveiled Photoshop for Apple’s M1 chip today. According to the company, the ARM-compatible version is expected to offer “significant performance gains” to users of Apple’s custom silicon.
While Adobe had a beta version of Photoshop for M1 available since November, this is the first time that it is widely available. Previously, Apple users could run the Intel version through Apple’s Rosetta technology, which did not take full advantage of the power of the new chip.
The M1 version of the app, Adobe claims, offers a 50% increase in performance over analog Intel Macs:
Our internal tests show a wide range of features running an average of 1.5 times the speed of previous generation systems configured similarly. Our tests covered a wide range of activities, including opening and saving files, performing filters, and calculating heavy operations like content-sensitive filling and selecting a topic, which felt all significantly faster. Our early benchmarking also shows that some operations are significantly faster with the new chip.
Be warned that there are a few recent features missing in the M1 version of the app, including inviting others to edit cloud documents and preset sync.
It’s unclear how much faster the M1 version would be compared to current Intel chips, but it’s clear Adobe sees the benefit of moving to the ARM architecture. “Don’t blink. You might miss launching the splash screen, ”says Adobe
