A new investor note released today by analysts at Barclays Research indicates that iPhone 13 models coming later this year will “likely” have Touch ID support under the display. The report also corroborates other details about the iPhone 13, including that the devices will feature a smaller notch.
Perhaps more interestingly, analysts say the iPhone 13 will support on-screen Touch ID, citing “in-depth conversations about the industry.” It comes like both Bloomberg and the the Wall Street newspaper reported that the in-display Touch ID was being tested for the iPhone 13.
Notably, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a note to investors earlier this month that there was “no visibility on the current timeline for the iPhone” for adopting Touch ID at the screen this year.
Barclays analysts believe that the iPhone 13 will add “the fingerprint under glass” this year as “the security device of the future”. Barclays analysts write (via MacRumors):
For the 2H22 product cycle, we anticipate an architectural shift from structured light to time-of-flight, allowing for an even smaller footprint. Based on our industry conversations, we don’t think the structured light below the screen is likely to be ready for mass deployment in 2:22. We also see the adoption of the Glass Fingerprint, which is likely added in 2H21 iPhones, as a structural headwind for additional 3D sensing content at Apple and could be the security feature of the future.
Elsewhere in the investor’s note, Barclays Research predicts that the iPhone 13’s notch will be smaller this year thanks to changes in the design of the structured lighting system. The new design will be “more tightly integrated”, which is similar to what has also been reported by Macotakara. The rear-facing LiDAR scanner is also likely to remain exclusive to “Pro” models this year.
Finally, the Barclays research report teases that Apple is planning a “bigger change” to the notch’s design in 2022. It comes after Kuo announced that the 2022 iPhone 14 Pro models would be dropping the iPhone altogether. notch in favor of a perforation design. similar to what is used by some flagship Android products.
The exact brand of the 2021 iPhone remains unclear. Internally, Apple would have called this year the “S” year in terms of updates, but Apple’s marketing names are often kept under wraps until the announcement.
