LOS ANGELES, March 12 (Reuters) – James Cameron’s sci-fi blockbuster “Avatar” is set to return to the top of the all-time box office charts this weekend after the film’s re-release in China .

“Avatar,” which debuted in 2009, held the world box office title for a decade until it was surpassed by the Marvel superhero epic “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.

Cameron’s film on Friday generated around $ 3.5 million in new ticket sales after its re-release in China, where theaters rebounded after theaters closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

That puts “Avatar” just below the $ 2.798 billion raised worldwide by “Endgame,” according to distributor Walt Disney Co. Both films are now owned by Disney after the company bought entertainment assets from Fox in 2019. .

Cameron worked on four “Avatar” sequels. The next film, which has been repeatedly delayed, is currently slated for release in December 2022. (Reporting by Lisa Richwine Editing by Bill Berkrot)
