“Who is Mephisto?” “When will Mephisto appear?” “Is this character / rabbit / bush really Mephisto?” These are just a few of the high-sounding (and boring) fan theories that have bounced around the internet during the time that WandaVision aired, even though there was no indication the Marvel supervillain would appear. It was an idea that fans built in their heads as WandaVision was heading towards its conclusion (without mephisto), but which hadn’t even occurred to the writer and executive producer Jac schaeffer, who revealed that she hadn’t even heard of the character until the press tour arrived and suddenly everyone was asking her about Mephisto.
Fan theories were the bane, though some might say godsend, WandaVisionthe existence of. In some cases, the creators of the Disney + series have amused or entertained fan theories, but a couple actually had no bearing on what was in the series itself. One of them was the so-called “clues” to Mephisto, a demon lord who would frequently run into Wanda Maximoff in the comics, and a character Schaeffer had no knowledge of until the press tour, has Schaeffer told Mashable.
“There had never been a conscious intention on my part to create Mephisto red herrings, because I didn’t know who Mephisto was until I started doing the press,” Schaeffer said in an interview. after the season finale.
Many fans have speculated that Mephisto was the real Big Bad behind the events of WandaVision, due to the character’s history with Wanda Maximoff in past comics, especially in the series The Vision and the Scarlet Witch, from which WandaVision drew some inspiration. Throughout the series were sprinkled with references to the “devil,” which fans took as clues that Mephisto would appear, or was the secret identity of one of the many supporting characters. But these were just coincidences, Schaeffer said:
“Why have we talked so much about the devil? It’s a real coincidence. He’s never been a part of our storytelling conversations. We have been very clear that the biggest problem is grief. And then the bad exterior is Agatha. So as a viewer and as a lover of the show and the characters, I wanted nothing more.
So while the heck may be the details, it’s clear fan speculation shouldn’t be. Even the theories that ended up turning out to be correct – like Agnes’ true identity as the show’s Big Bad Agatha Harkness – were a bit on shaky ground, as it was recently revealed that Schaeffer and co. didn’t decide to make Agatha the “outer” villain until later in the game. The only constant – on the show and in real life – is grief and how we get out of it. And that’s all we should get out of WandaVision.
