British hi-fi brand Cambridge Audio has unveiled its latest pair of true wireless headphones, which could present a compelling challenge for the next AirPods 3. The Melomania 1 Plus costs $ 139, undervaluing the AirPods model. cheaper while promising more advanced features.
Chief among these is that the Melomania 1 Plus, unlike the original Melomania 1 headphones, is compatible with the Cambridge Audio mobile companion app. Along with the custom equalizer setting, this gives the Melomania 1 Plus a ‘high performance audio mode’, which applies enhanced amplification of the same type as the company’s CX line of hi-fi amplifiers.
This could unlock superior sound quality when playing high-res audio tracks, and it’s one of the many features that could give the Melomania 1 Plus an edge over AirPods and the rest of the best wireless headphones on the market.
Battery life is relatively high for a true wireless pair: Cambridge Audio claims the Melomania 1 Plus is good for 9 hours per charge, with up to 45 hours available in the charging case. That’s almost twice the longevity of AirPods, on both counts.
The Melomania 1 Plus also supports the high-quality aptX Bluetooth codec in addition to the standard SBC and AAC codecs. It is also compatible with Google Assistant and Siri.
There’s no active noise cancellation (ANC), but that’s rare at this price, and 10 relatively generous replaceable tip sets come in the box. This helps you achieve a secure fit and maintain passive sound insulation.
Like the Melomania 1, the Melomania 1 Plus also has IPX5 certified water resistance. It is therefore better protected against water infiltration than standard AirPods, which do not have an IP rating, and AirPods Pro IPX4.
Of course, Apple has a new model on the way, the oft-leaked AirPods 3, and they could be revealed as early as an Apple event on March 23. But it’s always good to see top-level competition, especially at an event. relatively affordable price point.
