Edge’s first SmackDown match since 2011 will have Fastlane implications

At the turn of this century, when WWE first split Raw and SmackDown into separate brands with (mostly) separate rosters, Edge was a key player in the blue brand. The “SmackDown Six” era didn’t last too long, and the Superstar Rated R was drafted (and moved via various other plot devices) between the two shows on several occasions over the next ten years. But for a lot of us, Edge is up there with guys like Undertaker and Rey Mysterio when you think of Team Blue.

His retirement speech took place on Gross, but he was a SmackDown superstar when he had to drop out of the World Heavyweight Championship and retire after WrestleMania 27. He also spent the first round of his comeback on the red show, but now he’s challenging universal champion Roman Reigns to WrestleMania 37 – and that means he works on FOX on Friday nights.

Now that means he will have his first televised match on Smack down since he beat a child named Drew McIntyre on March 22, 2011.

This one will be against Jey Uso. The winner will serve as the special executor for Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns’ Universal title match at Expressway two days later. No matter who wins it, it will fuel not only Edge’s Mania matchup, but the ongoing rivalry with Bryan who better lead to something down the road somewhere.

I’m not sure why WWE is insisting on promoting the “first time in 11 years” – Edge had several games on SmackDown in early 2011 – but whatever. We all want to forget about the Dolph Ziggler / Vickie Guerrero feud he was involved in … and that his last pre-retirement feud was against Alberto Del Rio.

Edge vs Jey joins a Sasha Banks / Nia Jax Women’s SmackDown title match on the Expressway go home.

Sounds like a good reason to watch FOX on March 19?
