Booker announced his decision to Kentucky Educational Television on Sunday, saying he could find common ground on critical issues.

Amy McGrath narrowly beat Booker in the 2020 Senate Democratic primary, wielding massive fundraising, support from the Senate Democratic campaign arm, a number of unions and others who were drawn to his experience as a former fighter pilot.
But Booker’s offer from the left, touting his support for the Green New Deal (which he called the “Kentucky New Deal”), universal basic income and “Medicare for All,” drew support from progressive leaders. from all over the country. He has become a national voice in protests against police brutality and racial injustice following the police murders of George Floyd in Minnesota and Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky.
Last year, Booker, then the youngest black lawmaker in Kentucky at 35 and from one of the state’s poorest zip codes, argued that his post was just right for the moment.
McGrath only beat Booker by a few points, and she ultimately lost to Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell by nearly 20.
