Eddie Van Halen’s son protects his father’s legacy.
Young musician Wolfgang took to social media on Monday after the 2021 Grammy Awards aired on Sunday to talk about the “In Memoriam” segment, which briefly featured the late rocker.
Wolfgang, 29, began his statement by revealing that he turned down an offer from the Recording Academy to perform during the segment, believing that no one “could live up to what my father did in music except himself ”.
He continued, explaining that he understood the segment would feature “song tracks” that would be performed for the deceased performers to be honored.

“I didn’t realize they would only show Pop for 15 seconds in the middle of 4 full performances for others that we had lost,” he said. “What hurt the most was that he wasn’t even mentioned when they talked about artists we lost at the start of the show.”

The young star said he was aware that “rock is not the most popular genre right now,” but criticized the Academy for being “a little out of touch” and for appearing to “ignore the legacy that my father left on the instrument, the world of rock and music in general. “
“There will never be another innovator like him,” said Wolfgang.

The Mammoth musician WVH said he “wasn’t looking to start some sort of hate parade” and figured his dad “would probably risk laughing and saying ‘Ehh that gives an s —?'”
He added that he hopes to have the opportunity to speak directly with the Academy “not only about the legacy of my father, but the legacy of the rock genre in the future”.

The long “In Memoriam” segment was also recently criticized for leaving out “Glee” star Naya Rivera, who recorded and released the song “Sorry” in 2013.
