Police respond to shootings Sunday night in New Orleans Central Business District

An alleged armed thief was killed Sunday night in the central business district of New Orleans following a shootout with police who injured three other seriously injured, authorities said.
New Orleans Police Department spokesman Andy Cunningham told reporters that the suspect opened fire on police around 18:45. Cunningham added that no officer had been hit during an exchange of gunfire, but that an officer had been injured in a car accident while he was went to the scene.
"It was as if" Wild, Wild West "was happening," said a witness to local media.
The spokesman for the New Orleans Emergency Medical Services, Lt. Jonathan Fourcade, told Fox 8 Live that the shooting had occurred near the intersection of Canal Street and Elk. Square. The intersection is just outside the boundaries of the French Quarter and close to the New Orleans City Hall, the Superdome and the University of Medicine School. Tulane University.

It was not clear right away if the three wounded victims were passersby. NOLA.com reported that one of the victims was 17 years old. Fourcade said all three were at the University Medical Center in critical condition and added that another person had been treated at the hospital for abrasions.
The witness told NOLA.com that he saw a man running on Tulane Avenue before hearing about 50 shots, allegedly fired by the man and at least two policemen. The witness added that he had later seen the authorities try to revive the man after his fall in front of the Tulane Medical Center.
