The 7-foot-6 former basketball player underwent neck fusion surgery as a result of the crash and has spent the past eight weeks in hospital and undergoing rehabilitation, the statement said.
“His very strong sense of faith is put to the test as he participates in grueling physical therapy and learns to cope with the challenges of paraplegia,” the team said.
“Doctors have told him that his road to recovery will be both long and arduous, perhaps an even more difficult physical challenge than playing professional basketball.”
Still, he is in good spirits, the statement said, and plans to use the accident “as a platform to raise public awareness of the importance of bicycle safety,” the statement said.
Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said he was “saddened” to learn of the crash.
“Shawn was always incredibly determined and showed a fighting spirit,” said Cuban. “We wish him all the best in his recovery. He will always be a part of our Mavs family.”
In his eight-plus seasons with the team, Bradley “has demonstrated all the qualities you look for in someone representing your organization,” said Mavericks general manager Donnie Nelson. “He has always displayed unwavering courage and determination and we think of him during this difficult time. He is a maverick for life.”
