Everything we know about the Pixel 5a from Android 12 Preview

[ad_1]

As we gradually approach the middle of the year, rumors have started to circulate about the next Google Pixel phone, supposedly the “Pixel 5a”. Here’s what we learned about Google’s next phone from the Android 12 Preview builds.

The Developer Preview and Beta versions of Android have long been a source of information on what’s to come for Google’s Pixel phones, from upcoming models to features in the upcoming quarterly Pixel Feature Drop. As you might expect, the Android 12 Developer Preview builds were no different, providing a host of new details, including some info on upcoming Pixel phones, such as the Pixel 5a.

Here, we’ve rounded up some of the smaller info on the upcoming Pixel phone as discovered via the Android 12 Developer Preview, and we’ll keep this area updated as more details are revealed.

Google “Pixel 5a”

Right off the bat, the biggest news of the Android 12 developer preview period is that Google’s next mid-year phone will indeed be called the “Pixel 5a.” The information comes from the famous Google Camera modder and a member of the Android community. cstark27 (H / T Mishaal rahman) and verified by our own Dylan Roussel.

Pixel 5a: GR0M2
Pixel 4a (5G): G025I
Pixel 5: GTT9Q8

The nickname “Pixel 5a” has long been guessed and even mentioned at some point almost a year ago in the Android Open Source Project. This new name mention in the Android 12 Developer Preview gives us renewed confidence in the Google brand of their next Pixel device.

Model number

Along with the confirmation of the name of the “Pixel 5a”, the same source provides a model number for the device, “GR0M2”. From what we can determine, this will be the Pixel 5a’s ‘international’ model number – not the number we’ll see on boxes in the US – as it appears alongside two other numbers. international models.

As a note about this model number, not directly related to Android 12, it was discovered by Mukul Sharma that this Pixel 5a model number GR0M2 was recently released by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), a similar regulatory agency to the FCC in the United States. This approval brings the Pixel 5a closer to release. For comparison, the Pixel 4a received approval from BIS about two months before it arrived in the United States and four months before its launch in India.

Code name

While the internal document we reported on last year referred to the Pixel 5a with the codename “Barbette,” our Dylan Roussel discovered in the first release of Android 12 Developer Preview that the correct codename was “Barbet”. Notably, unlike “barbette”, “barbet” is a type of fish, which better matches the theme of Pixel code names.

This corrected “barbet” codename for the Pixel 5a has since been confirmed by our APK Insight team’s investigation of version 8.2 of the Google Camera app.
