It took two franchise labels, but the Denver Broncos finally get a multi-year deal with safety Justin Simmons.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Friday that the Broncos and Simmons are in the process of finalizing a long-term contract, according to sources familiar with the situation.
The multi-year agreement took years. John Elway used the franchise tag on Simmons last year, hoping it would be a placeholder. Sides couldn’t close a deal before the July deadline, forcing Star Safety to play on the one-year tender.
New Broncos general manager George Paton branded Simmons again this year to keep him out of the free market.
This time around, a long-term solution is quickly brewing.
Simmons’ deal should make him the highest-paid security in the NFL, and he will be worth every penny.
The long, athletic hawk ball is a game-changing force. Perfect in coach Vic Fangio’s system, Simmons can cover in space, recover quickly from the backend and dive against the run. There are few or no holes in his game.
As of 2018, Simmons has been one of three players with over 250 tackles and over 10 INTs (Vikings ‘Harrison Smith and Titans’ Kevin Byard). Simmons is the only player with 250 tackles and 12 INTs in that span, according to NFL Research.
Not only is he a dynamic playmaker, Simmons doesn’t miss the games either. The 27-year-old has played every defensive shot since the start of 2018 (3,067), the longest active streak of any player, per Next GenStats (including the playoffs).
Locking down Simmons has been a priority for the Broncos for years. Finally, that deal is in the process of being made, keeping a keystone of Fangio’s defense in Denver for the long haul.
