NEW ORLEANS – An alleged armed thief was shot dead after a shootout with New Orleans police officers in Canal Street on Sunday night.

WWL reports that five people were shot, one is in critical condition and four are stable. One of the patients is 17 years old.

During the exchange, the vehicle of a NOPD officer was overturned in the city center while trying to react to the incident. The officer was injured but did not sustain serious injuries.

Police immediately shut down Canal Street and Elk Place streets as well as parts of Tulane Avenue after the shooting was reported around 7:00 pm.

At that time, the police are unable to determine whether the shots that were injured by spectators were from the shooter or the police.

NOPD spokesman Andy Cunningham told WWL that the two agencies were "involved".

This is all the information we have at the time.
