Bowen Yang, you did it again. Consistently raising the bar for all of us and doing it perfectly. On last night Saturday Night Live, Yang went to the “Weekend Update” office and turned it to dust with his talent, giving a monologue about anti-Asian hatred and violence that was as funny as it was powerful. After being presented with a title card that reads “Asian Cast Member” (“Is This My Official Title?”), Yang shared her own version of those infographics you’ve seen circulating on Instagram about how you can help AAPI communities in the wake of the racist Atlanta murders and the general increase in hate crimes, like “Six Ways to Check Your AAPI Friends and Tell Them So Sexy”, and “Call Your senators and demand that they know the lesbian characters of Sailor Moon! ” (But actually.) Yang went on to express a sense of helplessness in the face of imperialism and racism, saying, “If someone’s personality is ‘hit an Asian grandmother’, it is not a dialogue. I have an Asian grandmother. You want to hit her. There’s no middle ground, Mom, ”before I come to her central thesis:“ Do more ”. As in, it goes beyond a simple one-time donation. As in: “Why are you telling me that you did tip your manicurist?” Let me know when you get down on your knees and rub her feet while she looks at your phone. Do more.”

At the end of the monologue, Yang went from joking to sadness to empowering, sharing the joy of the Mandarin. jiayou, which essentially translates to “refuel!” and saying, “This is the year of the metal ox, which basically means a car.” So everyone get on, fasten your seatbelt, there are no pee breaks, we’re driving at dawn, grannies! It’s one of the best things we’ve seen on Weekend Update in ages, and a testament to Yang’s ever-growing powers as a cast member. We still want to see his “Gay Passover Bunny” character, however.
