Federal death row serial killer dies in hospital

RIVERSIDE, Calif .– A convicted serial killer, including two young boys, died in an Indiana hospital on Sunday, authorities said.

Joseph Edward Duncan died at the medical center near the United States Penitentiary in Terre Haute, where he was on death row, according to a statement from prosecutors in Riverside County, California.

Duncan, 58, had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

Duncan was convicted of the murder of four family members in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, in 2005. He abducted two children, Dylan and Shasta Groene, from the family home and tortured them in Montana before to kill the boy.

Shasta Groene was the sole survivor of the rampage and was rescued when Duncan stopped by a restaurant in Coeur d’Alene and staff recognized the girl.

Following that conviction, Duncan was extradited to Southern California to stand trial for the death of Anthony Martinez, 10, of Riverside County in 1997. Duncan, who is from Tacoma, Wash., Was bound by the DNA to murder. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.

“While I would have liked to have witnessed his execution knowing that he now stands before God and that he is held responsible for what he did, what he did to my son and the crimes horrible things he has committed to others, that is true justice ”. Anthony’s father, Ernesto Martinez, said in a statement provided by prosecutors.

In court documents filed earlier this year, lawyers revealed Duncan had brain surgery last October and was diagnosed with glioblastoma, stage 4 brain cancer. Court records say he refused chemotherapy. and radiotherapy.
