A factory official who was one of five people killed in the Illinois massacre sent a message to his wife, "I love you, I was shot at work," a few moments before I died.
Terra Pinkard revealed her husband's latest message, Josh, on his Friday afternoon – when gunman Gary Martin opened fire on Henry Pratt Co.'s warehouse in Aurora after learning at a meeting that he was returned.
Pinkard called the tragic shooting a "literal nightmare" in a moving article on Facebook on Sunday. Her husband, aged 37, from Oswego, was attending this meeting with Martin.
"I received a message at 1:24 from my precious husband, who said that I loved you, that I was shot at work. It took me several times to read it before I realized it was real, "she wrote. "I've called her phone a few times, texting, FaceTime, nothing. I called her factory and a lady responded saying that she was barricaded in her room and that the police were everywhere. Of course my heart has dropped. "
Pinkard went on to explain that she had had to wait for hours to learn that Josh was among the dead.
"The police told us that there had been deaths. He read my husband's name, "she wrote. "I immediately left and went to pick up my children. With the help of my pastor, the family being always in planes to join us, I told my children that their father had not survived and that he was in paradise with Jesus. I have never had to do anything so hard. "
The Post then paid tribute to Josh, whom she called "the most intelligent person I've ever met" and "my best friend".
"I want to shout from the roofs how amazing Josh was! … The man who was dying and who had regained the clarity of mind a mere second, will send me a last text to let me know that he would like me always, "wrote Pinkard. "This incredible person has been stolen."
The remaining victims were identified as Clayton Parks, 32; Russell Beyer, 47 years old; Vicente Juarez, 54 years old; and Trevor Wehner, 21, a student on the first day of his internship.
Josh and three other colleagues were at the meeting with Martin when they were shot. Martin shot dead a fifth employee before injuring another and five policemen.
It was unclear why Martin, a 15-year-old employee, had been fired from the factory, which manufactures various types of valves.
