The 49ers have spent the last three weeks trying to trade in the draft, ultimately making a deal with the Dolphins to move up to No. 3 overall. Kyle shanahan tackled the trade, confirming that it was indeed about drafting a quarterback.
“We looked at how our four years went and we looked at how we want the next four years to go and we looked at where we are with the project and the options that are out there.Shanahan said, via NFL.com. “And that’s why, sitting there watching this stuff since January and all the way through the process, we pretty firmly thought that we were going to stay at the altar setting there at twelve o’clock.. “
The move comes although the Jets’ plans are not fully known. While Urban Meyer essentially confirmed that the Jaguars will draft Trevor Lawrence first overall, the Jets will trade pick or trade Sam darnold. Increased noise on option B, with Jets taking BYU Zach wilson, has emerged in recent days.

The 49ers seem to choose the third quarterback in this draft. Shanahan said the team were comfortable with three of the quarterback prospects being the long-term answer, adding that options 4 and 5 would also have the potential to elevate the team (Twitter link via Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com). Shanahan expects the first five QBs in the draft to be drafted sooner than most currently expect. No draft has started with four consecutive passers chosen, but that possibility is live this year. Selected in the top five for the first time since their draft Matt ryan, the Falcons have a chance to select the 35-year-old’s alleged heir to No.4.
With Lawrence and Wilson supposed to be gone by the time the 49ers choose, they’ll likely draft either Justin fields, Trey Lance or Mac Jones. Interestingly, the Jones and Fields Professional Days take place every second Tuesday. Shanahan and John lynch will attend Jones’, with the 49ers sending other staff to Fields, ‘notes NBC Sports’ Peter King. Deputy General Director Adam peters will be in Columbus for Fields Professional Day, per Wagoner, who adds that Shanahan plans to meet the ex-Buckeyes star at some point. Shanahan and Lynch did not attend Wilson or Lance, with the 49ers unwilling to arouse suspicion of their plans (Twitter link via Albert Breer from SI.com). Shanahan also plans to meet with Lance.
While Shanahan has said anyone on the 49ers can be traded, the team wants so far Jimmy garoppolo around this season. The 49ers became the last team to mention the Chiefs Alex smith-at-Patrick mahomes transition. Shanahan said it would be difficult for the 49ers to find a better-equipped quarterback to lead the team to wins this season, per Wagoner (on Twitter).

Two years remain on Garoppolo’s contract. He is expected to have $ 26.4 million against the San Francisco cap this season. The 49ers could trade their incumbent and incur less than $ 3 million in dead money. The Patriots, who sent Garoppolo to the 49ers in 2017, might be interested.
