FaceTime group still partially broken after security update, Apple warned

A few weeks ago, the FaceTime group of Apple had a major security breach that potentially allowed users to listen to others without their permission. The flaw was quickly made public, forcing Apple to temporarily shut down FaceTime servers when creating a fix. A week later, Apple released iOS 12.1.4 that addressed the security issue and reactivated Group FaceTime to those users.



Unfortunately, the FaceTime group, even under iOS 12.1.4, has not yet found its original features. A MacRumors thread started the day after the release of version 12.1.4, revealing that users were unable to add more users to a FaceTime call. It turns out that users are no longer able to add a person to a FaceTime face-to-face call. The "Add Person" button remains gray and inactive in this situation. The only way to add another person to a FaceTime Group call at this point is to start the call with at least two other people. This slight distinction seems to be a source of confusion for many users.

MacRumeurs The forum user, Bob-K, has persisted in his calls to technical support from Apple. He was finally informed that the "Add Person" button not working in this situation was a known problem and that they did not know when it would be corrected.

Apple's support on Twitter also seems to be aware of this restriction:


We have been able to reproduce this problem, but it seems that this workaround is not entirely reliable because a user has stated that he is not able to regularly add people even during a group call. A search on Twitter shows a number of users who believe that Group FaceTime remains disabled, although some users may simply not know about the iOS 12.1.4 update or be confused by the gray question of the "Add a nobody".

Apple is actively working on iOS 12.2 Beta which has not yet seen the addition of the fix for Group FaceTime, but we were expecting them to fix the current bugs in a later 12.2 beta release.
