Epic Games files Apple complaint with UK CMA

Fortnite creator Epic Games has filed a formal complaint with the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to express solidarity in the antitrust regulator’s investigation into Apple, Reuters reported Tuesday (March 30).

The North Carolina-based video game company co-founded by Mark Rein is already mired in lawsuits over commissions charged by Apple’s App Store. When Epic’s Fortnite attempted to avoid those commissions by introducing its own in-app payment method, Apple banned the popular gaming app from its store.

The CMA has opened an investigation into the App Store after numerous complaints accusing Apple of abusive terms for app developers. The iPhone maker’s app store has been at the center of many complaints about commission or fee structures, according to Reuters.

Tim Sweeney, CEO and co-founder of Epic Games, has in the past openly expressed his negative opinion on Apple’s policies. He called the practices of the Apple App Store one of the reasons the costs are so high for consumers. Additionally, he said Apple’s policies could “stifle innovation among developers.”

Epic Games is in the midst of several pending lawsuits against Apple in the United States and Australia, in addition to an antitrust complaint filed in the European Union.

“It’s no surprise that Epic is pushing their agenda forward to the UK Competition and Markets Authority, as we’ve seen them use the same manual all over the world,” an Apple spokesperson said. to Reuters.

the legal battles between Epic Games and Apple has prompted plenty of tech companies to join the fray, with some backing the games company and others sharing the iPhone maker’s point of view. As of the end of last month, Epic was still seeking support from tech companies and looking for the testimonial from the parent of online dating app Tinder.

Epic Games hosted a antitrust complaint in the European Union against Apple in February, accusing the big Silicon Valley tech company of deliberately engaging in unfair practices in an attempt to get rid of its competitors. He further accused Apple of violating EU competition law by manipulating the operating system ecosystem he controls in order to profit from it.
