Laika is expanding into the world of live-action filmmaking for the first time, with an adaptation of John Brownlow’s upcoming debut novel, Seventeen.
Known for their groundbreaking work in the field of stop-motion animation, Studio Oregon has secured the rights to Seventeen following an intense bidding war. The option announcement was made on Wednesday by Laika Chairman and CEO Travis Knight.
“For the past 15 years, Laika has been committed to making films that matter,” he said. “Across mediums and genres, our studio has fused art, craftsmanship and technology in the service of bold, distinctive and enduring stories. With Seventeen, Laika takes this philosophy in an exciting new direction.
“Seventeen is a stiff cocktail of wicked wit, exhilarating action and raw emotion, ”added Knight. “John has a wonderfully unique voice. He created a brilliant universe with his own powerful identity. Seventeen is a thriller with a soul, an adrenaline-fueled curvy actor with a sincere heart beating beneath his wavy pecs.

Well known for her work in film and television, Brownlow previously wrote Sylvia Plath’s biopic and romantic drama. Sylvia, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Daniel Craig, as well as a limited series of four episodes Flemish, which starred Dominic Cooper as James Bond author Ian Fleming. Additionally, he wrote and produced the BBC’s three-part limited series. The miniaturist, which starred Golden Globe winner Anya Taylor-Joy (The queen’s gambit).

Founded by Knight in 2005, Laika has so far won Oscar nominations for each of its animated feature films—Coraline, ParaNorman, Boxtrolls, Kubo and the two strings and Missing link-with a scientific and technological Oscar plaque, which recognized its innovations in 3D printing. Receive another name at the Oscars for best achievement in visual effects, Kubo also won the BAFTA award for best animated film.
The studio’s most recent feature film, 2019 Missing link, won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature, and it’s currently in production on his sixth animated feature.
In retrospect, Laika’s live-action ambitions aren’t all that surprising. After making his stop-motion debut in the years 2016 Kubo, Knight then shot the transformers photo live from Paramount Bumblebee. Afterwards, the three-time Oscar nominee boarded the Warner Bros. adaptation. Six billion dollar man, with Mark Wahlberg attached to the star, though this long-standing feature remains in pre-production.
UK publisher Hodder & Stoughton early acquired worldwide publication rights to Seventeen, that Hanover Square will release in the United States in 2022.
