Apple will recalibrate iPhone 11 batteries to fix performance and capacity issues

Apple will try to fix the battery drain and reduced performance issues that plagued some iPhone 11 devices by recalibrating their batteries in a future update (via MacRumors). According to an Apple support document, the process will happen when you update an iPhone 11, 11 Pro, or 11 Pro Max to the next iOS 14.5.

According to the document, the battery health system may take a few weeks to determine the remaining capacity of your battery and the performance it can deliver. It doesn’t seem like users should notice too much of a difference during the process, although there is a message in the battery status section of the settings menu explaining what is going on.

The process is currently being tested in the latest version of the developer beta, but given that Apple already has a support page for it, there’s a good chance it will make it the final version. If the recalibration fails, for any reason, Apple says so or an authorized service provider will replace the battery free of charge. Hopefully, if you are having battery issues with your iPhone 11, this process will help you alleviate them when version 14.5 is finally released.

It’s not unusual for Apple to release a paper about a battery change before it starts to happen. The company has been much more transparent when making changes to the iPhone’s power system since it was caught slowing down the performance of older iPhones to protect the battery.
