The next installment in the Resident Evil franchise, titled Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, has had its release date pushed back to November 24, 2021.
The new release date is a two-month delay, as the film was originally scheduled to hit theaters on September 3. The new November 24 release means the film hits theaters the day before Thanksgiving in the United States.
GameSpot has contacted Sony for more information on the delay. We will report back to you with any further details we receive.
The film is written and directed by Johannes Roberts (47 meters below) and will star Kaya Scodelario (Crawl), Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp), Robbie Amell (Upload), Tom Hopper (Black Sails) , Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) and Neal McDonough (The 100).
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City is set in the titular Midwestern city that was once home to the pharmaceutical company Umbrella Corporation. The company is gone and the city is a wasteland, and there is “great evil brewing beneath the surface.” Of course, evil is unleashed upon the city, and a group of survivors attempt to uncover the mystery behind it all – which leads back to Umbrella. The goal of the film was to add a lot more depth to these characters that fans know.
The film’s official title was revealed last month, and we’ve learned that Welcome to Raccoon City will be a long-standing story, according to Roberts. There’s a lot to come for RE fans, with Resident Evil Village arriving in May, a RE Netflix animated series following Leon and Claire, and a live-action Netflix series following the Wesker family.
