EXCLUSIVE: Netflix signs deal for two sequel to 2019 hit thriller Knives Out, which Rian Johnson will direct with Daniel Craig reprising his role as super detective Benoit Blanc. Johnson, who wrote the original, wrote the sequels and produced with partner Ram Bergman. Sources have said the deal will be worth north of $ 400 million, making it one of the largest streaming movie deals in history.
A sequel was expected, but the recent low-key auction that took place between three streamers – Apple and Amazon were the others – came as a surprise. How was this possible? The original was acquired under a single image contract by MRC, which distributed the film through Lionsgate. The first film cost $ 40 million and shot in a gross global north of $ 311 million. Owned and licensed by Johnson and Bergman frame by frame, Johnson and Bergman had the right to make the richest sequel deal possible. This gives Netflix a bona fide event movie franchise for its slate. Filming for the first photo will begin on June 28 in Greece and casting will begin immediately.
The agreement is remarkable, considering Knives Outthe origins. It happened because Danny Boyle quit the James Bond movie, leaving Craig with a downtime. Johnson, who loved Agatha Christie’s whodunits, had one in mind, and he and Bergman prepared it before Cary Joji Fukunaga stepped in as director of 007 and was ready to shoot.
