As Zenon would say, Bucky Barnes is in major crisis mode on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

After decades of brainwashing for murder against his will, he finally deals with what was done to him in private sessions with his court-appointed therapist, Dr. Christina Raynor, played by Amy Aquino. While Bucky isn’t really receptive to her – he’s lying about his nightmares and insults at trying to reach him – Raynor is determined to help the ex-assassin before it’s too late. Based on her past military experience and her battles with PTSD, she knows how bad things can go.

“That’s why she views her work with Bucky as a matter of life and death. If anyone’s at risk for PTSD, it’s probably the 106-year-old soldier who was made to kill people they actually loved and believed in, ”Aquino told TVLine. “She just sees him as someone who needs help because she knows that when she went through it, she wasn’t a soldier, and she just had to face those memories and find a way. ‘hold on to herself and her humanity, despite the things she was forced to do.

Raynor has one last chance to help Bucky before embarking on a worldwide mission alongside Sam to stop the Flag Smashers, who have created new Super Soldiers with a special serum. In a memorable scene from Episode 2, Raynor set up an impromptu therapy session with Bucky and Sam in prison – Bucky was arrested for missing a session with Dr. Raynor – in hopes of planting the seeds that will allow Bucky finally let them down. metaphorical walls he holds.

Falcon Winter Soldier Recap“She uses Sam as the rift in the armor because he’s a person he has a relationship with, and they’ve had that shared relationship with. [Steve Rogers’] Captain America, who is obviously the pivotal relationship in Bucky’s life, ”says Aquino. “She uses Sam as a ram to get through her armor, and it sort of works. This is just the beginning because it’s the only time she has, but knowing that he and Sam are going to be working together, she can hope that they will continue to open up.

Without their usual office space or the usual tools to work with, Raynor relied on a couples therapy format to get the superhero duo to start opening up to each other. According to Aquino, the comedy scene was just as fun to film as it was to watch, thanks to the superb improvisational skills of his co-stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan.

“Everyone was having fun with it,” she says. “It was the time we could have fun with, but then they were able to let him go where he needed to go, which is the big reveal Bucky has.” My biggest challenge was not to stop them too early because [director Kari Skogland] let them improvise. It would be crazy not to with these two guys who are so smart and have such a strong relationship because that’s where all that gold was coming out.

As the Falcon and Winter Soldier leave town, Raynor’s 20-minute session will have to be enough for now. Whether or not she will return to provide more help remains to be seen.

“Raynor considers this to be probably his last chance with him,” concludes Aquino. “But, obviously, this universe is large. “
