Several people were killed Wednesday night in Orange in a shooting, police said.

Lt. Jennifer Amat, spokesperson for the Orange Police Department, said officers received a call around 5:30 p.m. of gunfire and responded to a business at 202 W. Lincoln Avenue in Orange. The address is a two-story beige office complex that contains a number of small businesses.

The officers received gunfire on their arrival and retaliated, Amat said.

Details of the incident were scarce on Wednesday evening, but Amat said several people were shot and some of them died.

The shooter was taken to a hospital in an unknown condition, Amat said. There is currently no threat to the public, she added.

The Orange incident follows two mass shootings that prompted further calls for gun control measures. Eight people, including six of Asian origin, were killed earlier this month in a series of shootings at Atlanta-area spas. Six days later, a man opened fire at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, killing 10 people.

Representative Katie Porter said on Twitter: “I am deeply saddened by reports of a mass shooting in Orange County, and I continue to keep the victims and their loved ones in my thoughts as we continue to to learn more.

It is a story of rupture; it will be updated.
