After hearing that Discord was working on a Clubhouse-like feature, the company introduced Stage Channels. The new feature has launched on all platforms where Discord is available, including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and the web.
According to Discord, Stage Channels was developed after the platform noticed more people using voice chat in unique ways.
“As more and more of these larger, audio-centric events emerge, we have realized that it can be difficult to manage audio events organized across vocal channels,” Discord said.
With the launch of Stage Channels, community servers can focus the conversation with selected individuals on an audience of listeners. Discord said stage channels are useful for events like AMAs or interviews, book clubs, or karaoke. “More people talking to each other thinking it’s their turn or that awkward long silence before someone is like ‘… oh, am I up?'”
When a scene is set up, moderators can manage who is speaking, and also add, remove, or deactivate an existing speaker. Discord said members of the public can also raise their hands at an event if they want to speak.
“Whether you’re in the spotlight or in the audience, Stage Channels are here to help bring everyone a little closer for audio-centric events of all kinds,” Discord said. “It’s not often that we introduce a whole new type of channel to Discord – we’re excited to see the crazy ways you use scene channels.”
The launch of Discord’s latest feature comes after other services, including Slack, Twitter, and LinkedIn, also announced Clubhouse-like features. Frankly, it has been amazing how quickly businesses have embraced Clubhouse features.
The launch of Stage Channels Discord makes the feature among the most accessible as it is available on so many platforms. Clubhouse continues to be available only on iOS, although it is set to launch on Android in the future.
