GOP groups back Georgia and Iowa electoral reform laws amid lawsuits against Dem

Two national Republican groups have intervened in state-level lawsuits Democrats have brought against new electoral integrity laws in Georgia and Iowa.

The Republican National Committee and the Republican National Senate Committee have stepped in to defend new GOP-backed laws in both states, which Democrats have called voter suppression and racist.

“Democrats have grossly misinterpreted the provisions and impact of recent Georgia and Iowa electoral reforms,” RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel and NRSC Chair Senator Rick Scott said in a joint statement announcing the interventions. “Sadly, but not surprisingly, many mainstream media bought the hook, the line, and the weight of Democratic rhetoric in these dishonest attacks. But we are confident that the courts will see through this partisan rhetoric and respect the two laws that reasonably balance access and integrity. “

They called the Democrats’ lawsuit over Georgia Senate Bill 202 a “public relations coup” and the challenge to the Iowa SF 413 “without merit.”

Georgia Election Reform Bill Increases Advance Voting Days, Enables Observation of the Count of Ballots, Bans the Harvesting of Ballots, and Continues to Allow Voters to Vote by Mail Without Excuse , but requires proof of identity, among other measures.

A number of Hollywood stars have said they plan to boycott labor in the state, an industry hotspot, to protest the new law.

But Gov. Brian Kemp wrote in a Fox News op-ed Wednesday that Democrats had falsely characterized the bill he signed.

“These reforms have nothing to do with ‘voter suppression’ or ‘Jim Crow’,” he argued. “The Electoral Integrity Act makes it easier to vote by expanding access to the ballot boxes and it is more difficult to cheat by ensuring the security of the ballot boxes.”

In Iowa, SF 413 aims to establish uniform voting protocols across the state’s 99 counties, hold local officials accountable for non-compliance with state rules, allow tabulation to begin before on polling day and regulate the ballot boxes for those absent.

The lawsuit comes as GOP Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who is the certified winner in her run for office by six razor-thin votes, fights for House Democrats for the right to retain her seat.

They claim 22 ballots were improperly excluded from the count and would have shifted the election to Democratic candidate Rita Hart.

Miller-Meeks’ victory was certified by state officials after a recount, but the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives may have the final say.

“Democrats are crusading to give Washington responsibility for the election, even if it means overriding the votes of voters in Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District in the name of partisan gains,” McDaniel and Scott said. “We know the American people are with us.”
