Tigers nominate Christin Stewart for assignment

The Tigers announced Thursday morning that they had named the outfielder Christin stewart for an assignment to open a spot on the 40-man left-hander list Derek holland, whose contract has been formally selected. Detroit also placed the right-hander Ron garcia on the list of injured at 10 days, retroactive to March 29, with abdominal tension.

Stewart, 27, was the 34th pick in the 2015 draft and was considered one of Detroit’s most promising farm workers during the early years of his professional career. He’s worked his way through the team’s minor league system and at one point has the potential to be a bat-first option in left field, but his production in the big league doesn’t match up. just not to his minor league numbers. Stewart has played 157 games with the Tigers over the past three seasons but posted a combined batting line of .225 / .300 / .376 in 586 home plate appearances.

Despite enormous raw power, Stewart’s exit speeds (career 86.7 mph) and hard hit rates (32.2%) have never been particularly impressive. He was probably a little less prone to play-offs than some feared when he made 26% of his appearances at the Double-A plateau, hitting with a 24.9% clip in the big leagues against a walk rate of 8.3%.

Stewart still has three minor league options left, so it looks like he has finally fallen out of favor with club makers after his lack of production since his debut in 2018. The Inked Tigers Robbie grossman (two years, $ 10 million) and Nomar mazara (one year, $ 1.75 million) over the winter and took on an intriguing outfielder, Akil Baddoo, of the divisional rival Twins in Draft Rule 5. Baddoo has had a spring training monster, and Detroit has JaCoby Jones and Victor reyes (another old choice of rule 5) received a ticket for the opening day list. Meanwhile, Daz cameron and Derek hill, another pair of former top picks with better defensive skill sets, will open the year at the team’s alternate site.

The Tigers have a week to trade Stewart or attempt to pass him waivers. His raw power and trio of minor league options could pique the interest of another club in need of some depth of field. Stewart’s glove has long been considered mediocre, but he carries a career hitting line of .264 / .366 / .501 and 98 homers in just over 2,000 minor league appearances.

As for veteran Holland, it was announced earlier in the week that he was part of the squad roster on opening day. Those who didn’t take the left-hander’s spring training might be surprised due to Holland’s struggles in 2019-20, but there was no way the Tigers would drop him from the roster after he pitched. 9 1/3 shutout innings with just six hits and one. marching against a whopping 16 strikeouts during camp.
