The Tigers announced Thursday morning that they had named the outfielder Christin stewart for an assignment to open a spot on the 40-man left-hander list Derek holland, whose contract has been formally selected. The Tigers have a week to trade Stewart or attempt to pass him waivers. His raw power and trio of minor league options could pique the interest of another club in need of some depth of field. Stewart’s glove has long been considered mediocre, but he carries a career hitting line of .264 / .366 / .501 and 98 homers in just over 2,000 minor league appearances.
As for veteran Holland, it was announced earlier in the week that he was part of the squad roster on opening day. Those who didn’t take the left-hander’s spring training might be surprised due to Holland’s struggles in 2019-20, but there was no way the Tigers would drop him from the roster after he pitched. 9 1/3 shutout innings with just six hits and one. marching against a whopping 16 strikeouts during camp.
